The outreach strategy for the SY department aims at increasing the hiring within two MPE categories: women, with a particular focus on STEM, and nationals of CERN-wide under-represented Member States (ratio of budget contribution to number of MPE).
The SY outreach strategy starts within the 25by’25 framework but the goal is to have it as a long-term and sustainable effort.
The SY department follows the multiple paths outlined below so as to increasing the hiring on the desired categories. A document detailing the “SY outreach strategy” is being prepared. A budget has been made available.
Contributions of SY members to outreach should be recognized and mentioned accordingly on the yearly evaluation reports.
Anyone in the SY department who would like to be informed on outreach possibilities at CERN and outside can register at the self-subscribe mailing list OutreachTeam_SY@cern.ch.
The SY Outreach coordinators can be reached at Outreach.SY@cern.ch (thank you for starting the subject line with [OUTREACH]).
- Targeted attendance of SY members to in-person events
Each group in the SY department will send yearly a representative to a selected event or university in under-represented member states. A list of events and of universities is being prepared, in partnership with HR Talent Acquisition team. In-person events should be privileged as deemed more effective.
Slide decks covering various aspects of CERN life and focusing on the activities of the SY department will be provided.
Examples of slide deck chapters include: a) overview of CERN structure/mission/scientific programs; b) CERN machines, technology and impact on society (including KT); d) SY technical challenges and strength; e) life/facilities at CERN (ex: creche) and nationals network.
These slide decks can be cut or reorganized depending on the total time available. They will allow minimizing the work of each participant and will ensure that CERN and the SY department are presented in a coherent and common manner. Each SY representative should add some slides detailing his/her own work, tools used, products lifecycle etc. to make the presentation as practical and understandable as possible.
- Presentations at universities/schools during personal holidays
People returning home (or other places) for personal holidays can be asked to give a presentation to local universities or schools. With the previous approval of their management, their proven outreach contribution will be compensated with a half day of holiday. Materials for the presentation can be obtained by resources available for point 1) or point 3) depending on the school level.
- Attendance of SY members to local events and initiatives
There are many events in the area aimed at raising awareness of CERN at schools and providing female role models to children and students.
Example of recent events where CERN officially contributed include “Elargis Tes Horizons” https://www.elargisteshorizons.ch/fr/espace-mentorat and “Women and Girl in Science and Technology” https://indico.cern.ch/event/1208400/
Material for schools presentation can be can be found at the links above. Information on possible events will be distributed via the OutreachTeam_SY@cern.ch mailing list.
Contributing to recruiting activities with HR TA team
HR TA often attend virtual job fairs such as a recent one in the UK organized by https://careers.stemwomen.com .
Whilst HR representatives can tend the CERN virtual booth and answer many questions, technical representatives can be more specific on CERN’s and SY Department’s technology and required candidate profiles.
The time required by this kind of online activities is rather limited and can be carried out from the office. Information on possible events will be distributed via the OutreachTeam_SY@cern.ch mailing list.
